Marcus Nonius Macrinus Tomb Discovered. Russell Crowe as Marcus Nonius
Macrinus in Gladiator Movie
1800 years old monumental marble tomb of roman general Marcus Nonius Macrinus
has been found on the banks of the Tiber River north of Rome.
Marcus Nonius Macrinus is said to have inspired the character played by Russell
Crowe in the film Gladiator.
Elements of the life of Marcus Nonius Macrinus were incorporated into the character
of Maximus Decimus Meridius, played by Russell Crowe.
The tomb of Marcus Nonius Macrinus had collapsed but the parts are intact.
The intricately carved marble tomb complete with a stone inscription identifying
it as that of marcus nonius macrinus was found near the Via Flaminia, one of
the arterial roads which led in and out of ancient Rome.
Archaeologist Daniela Rossi said that tomb of Marcus Nonius Macrinus is the most
important ancient Roman monument to come to light for twenty or thirty years.
