Angel Island Fire, Large Fire at Angel island California:

Angel Island Fire

A large fire is currently burning on the Angel Island that started 
at approximately 9:00PM october 12th 2008 and is visible from all 
around the San Francisco Bay. By 10:00 PM the fire was still going 
and estimated at 100 acres.

Angel Island Location and Use

Angel Island is an island in San Francisco Bay that offers spectacular 
views of the San Francisco skyline, the Marin County Headlands and Mount 
Tamalpais. 

The entire Angel Island is included within Angel Island State Park, 
and is administered by California State Parks. 

Angel Island has been used for a variety of purposes, including military 
forts and immigration centers. The Immigration Station on the North East 
corner of Angel Island processed approximately one million Asian immigrants 
and has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

Angel Island Geography:

The highest point on the Angel Island almost exactly at its center, is Mount 
Caroline Livermore at 788 feet / 240 m. 

Angel Island is almost entirely in Marin County, California, although, there 
is a small sliver (0.7%) at the eastern end of it Fort McDowell which extends 
into the territory of San Francisco County. The United States Census Bureau 
reported Angel Island has a land area of 3.107 km² / 1.2 sq mi and a population 
of 57 persons as of the 2000 census.

Angel Island Access

Access to Angel Island is by private boat or public ferry from San Francisco, 
Tiburon or Vallejo. There is reduced ferry service during the winter at Angel Island.
Bicycles can be brought to Angel Island on the ferry and used on the island's main 
roads. Bikes and Segways can also be rented at Angel Island. Dogs are not allowed at 
Angel Island. Roller skates and skateboards are prohibited at Angel Island. No wood 
fires are allowed but there are designated barbecue and picnic areas available to 
use at Angel Island. A few campsites are also available for reservation at Angel Island.
Night travel on Angel Island is prohibited in some areas for reasons of park security 
and public safety.
